TENNESSEE REFORMS EXECUTION PROTOCOL: VERIFICATION CODE WILL NOW BE TAPED TO THE GURNEY

Tennessee Reforms Execution Protocol: Verification Code Will Now Be Taped to the Gurney

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Correction announced sweeping reforms Tuesday after the rescue of Christa Pike, who survived her own execution on September 30, was delayed roughly 30 minutes because the prison official who called 911 did not know the verification code, and the department initially informed dispatchers that nobody had called.

“We take this seriously,” a department spokesman said. “A condemned person who survives execution is entitled to prompt medical care, provided the call can be authenticated.”

Under the new protocol, the verification code will be taped to the gurney, printed on the inside cover of the execution logbook, and included in the condemned’s final paperwork “so that all parties have access to it during a survival event.”

The September 30 incident — in which Pike received two doses of pentobarbital, continued breathing, and was reported by her own execution team to be “not yet deceased” — exposed what officials called “a verification latency gap.” Unable to authenticate the call, and told by the department’s central control that no facility had requested an ambulance, dispatchers informed the caller at 9:03 p.m. that the call had been deemed false. Responders were admitted through the prison gates at 9:11.

Asked why central control denied the call, the spokesman said the department’s records at that moment reflected a completed execution. “A report of a living prisoner was inconsistent with the outcome on file,” he said. “It was classified accordingly.”

The reforms also include a monthly “still alive” drill for execution teams and a laminated card mounted in the chamber reading, in part: “IN THE EVENT OF SURVIVAL: 1) Remain calm. 2) Locate code. 3) Call 911. 4) State code clearly.”

Ethicists were blunt. “The state maintains a protocol precise enough to govern the straps on the gurney,” said one capital-punishment scholar. “Its plan for the possibility that she might live was a password nobody in the room had.”

Governor Bill Lee has suspended executions for the remainder of 2026 pending an independent review, which officials say will focus on whether the code should be shortened. Pike, who woke six days after the attempt and has since been returned to death row, has been provided a copy of the code, the department confirmed, “so that this does not happen again.”
